Independent Driving: What It Is and How to Prepare

Everything you need to know about the independent driving section of the practical test, including sat nav use and following signs.

About 20 minutes of your 40-minute test will be independent driving. This means following directions without the examiner telling you where to go. Here's what to expect.

Sat Nav or Road Signs?

In about 4 out of 5 tests, you'll follow a sat nav. In the other 1 in 5, you'll follow road signs. The examiner provides the sat nav — you don't need your own.

Following the Sat Nav

  • The examiner sets up the route — you just follow it
  • It's mounted on the dashboard where you can see it
  • You're not being tested on your navigation — if you take a wrong turn, it's not a fault (unless you do something unsafe)
  • The sat nav will recalculate if you go the wrong way
  • Quick glances at the screen are fine — treat it like checking your mirrors

Following Road Signs

  • The examiner will tell you to follow signs to a particular destination
  • They'll remind you if you seem lost
  • Going the wrong way isn't a fault — making an unsafe manoeuvre because you're lost is

Tips for Independent Driving

  • Plan ahead. Look at signs and road markings early so you're in the right lane.
  • If you're unsure, ask. You're allowed to ask the examiner to repeat or confirm directions.
  • Don't panic if you go wrong. The examiner will guide you back. Wrong turns don't count against you.
  • Keep driving normally. Don't slow down or behave differently just because you're "on your own" — that's the whole point.
